| I was inspired to make this film from my own personal experiences at raves and underground gatherings in California and Toronto, Canada. Despite the over-commercialization, and inherent drug problems that exist, I felt that there had been plenty of negative media coverage of rave culture, but nothing focusing on the positive aspects, its source and meaning, and how it needs to evolve. This is what this film is about. It is something that aboriginal cultures have been practicing since pre-history, and are still practicing today. Native American perspectives and philosophies are introduced to spark wonderment about why they have bothered to hold on to their rituals and dances despite such terrible hardships in recent time. In many ways, raves are a post-modern expression of something that is very old, and honest self expression is what is essential to beginning to understanding and respecting our relationship to the universe, which is nature, which is ourselves. | ![]() |

| Shot on Hi8 video, super 8 and 16mm film, this film offers a rather unconventional documentary format. In seven waves, the audience is taken on a journey of dancing, timelapse cinematography, and experimental electronic music (ABA Structure). Integrated with this visual and musical collage, unique perspectives on Native American culture and Rave Culture are voiced through interviews of people from different cultural and generational backgrounds. We see different forms of dancing from a Pow wow in South Dakota, to urban warehouse raves in Toronto, to the unique Moontribe raves out in the Mojave desert. This film travels from the waterfalls of Yosemite, to the deserts and mountains of Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado, to the deep gorge canyons of Utah. Simply, "Moment Utopia" explores the importance of connecting with yourself and with nature through self expression. | ![]() |
